How to work with projects in Claude.

A project is a dedicated workspace with its own chat history, project knowledge and project instructions. It pays off when you do the same thing again and again and always need the same background.

Creating a project

  1. Open “Projects” in the sidebar or go to claude.ai/projects.
  2. Choose “+ New Project” at the top right.
  3. Give it a name and description. Claude sees neither, they are only for your orientation.
  4. In Team and Enterprise, decide whether the project stays private or is visible to the whole organization.
  5. Add project instructions via “Set project instructions”.
  6. Upload project knowledge via “+”.

Projects are available on all plans, up to five on the Free plan. On paid plans, Claude automatically switches to a search mode (RAG) for large project knowledge, expanding capacity by up to ten times.

Rule of thumb: behavior belongs in the instructions, this week's task in the prompt. Test question for knowledge: would you hand this to a new colleague on their first day?

Sharing in Team and Enterprise

  1. Open the project and click “Share project” to the right of its name.
  2. Add people by name or email, or paste a list of addresses.
  3. Choose permissions: “Can view” (see contents and chat in the project) or “Can edit” (change instructions, knowledge and members).

Admins can turn off project sharing. On Pro and Max, every project belongs to the person who created it.

  • Chats in a project do not share their content automatically. Whatever should last, put into project knowledge as a short document.
  • Every project has its own memory. What Claude learns in one project stays there. In Team and Enterprise, memory is off by default until you turn it on.
  • Several clearly scoped projects beat one big “Work” project. The more topics, the more contradictory the instructions.
  • Move existing chats into a project via the arrow next to the chat name and “Add to project”. Archive finished projects instead of deleting them.
