What is a skill?

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file and, optionally, further files such as templates, reference lists or scripts. At first, Claude only sees the name and description of each skill. If your request matches, Claude loads the full instructions and follows them. So you do not have to call the skill; just describe your task.

Unlike a prompt, a skill stays available permanently, in every chat and every project.

Requirements

  • Skills are available on all plans: Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
  • Code execution and file creation has to be switched on. On Free, Pro and Max, go to Settings > Capabilities and enable Code execution and file creation.
  • Team and Enterprise: An Owner enables both Cloud code execution and file creation and Skills under Organization settings > Plugins & skills, Policy tab.

How to upload a skill

  1. Download the ZIP file below in the language you need. Do not unzip it.
  2. In Claude, open Customize > Skills.
  3. Click +, then choose + Create skill and Upload a skill.
  4. Upload the ZIP file. The skill appears in the list, where you can switch it on and off.
  5. Test it: describe a task in a new chat, for example “Turn this transcript into meeting minutes”.

The ZIP contains the skill folder, whose name matches the name field in the SKILL.md. The folder names are the same in every language, so install only one language version of each skill. If you change a skill, zip the folder again and upload it again.

Sharing skills with your team

On Team and Enterprise, you have two options:

  • Share directly: three-dot menu next to the skill > Share, then enter names or email addresses. Groups are only available on Enterprise. Recipients see the skill greyed out until they switch it on themselves. Shared skills are read-only.
  • Publish to the organisation: Publish to org submits the skill to the organisation's library. If a review process is set up, you suggest whether it should be installable, enabled by default or mandatory. All users stay on the approved version until an update is approved.

On Team, the Skill sharing toggle is switched on by default.

Security: read first, then upload

  • Only install skills from trusted sources. A skill gives Claude instructions and can run code. A manipulated skill could lead Claude to take actions that do not match its purpose.
  • Read the SKILL.md and all files beforehand. Pay particular attention to scripts, packages that get installed and connections to the internet. That is why every card below shows the full text of the SKILL.md. The two Python scripts only work locally with your files and do not call any external addresses.
  • No credentials in skills. Passwords, API keys, tokens or internal links do not belong in a skill, not even in a completed template. Anyone who receives the skill can see all of its files.
  • Check the content. The skills deliver drafts. They are no substitute for legal expertise on topics such as the AGG, the GDPR or public procurement law; the instructions of each skill say so as well.
